A fun visitor this morning to my back garden, this is the white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata), sometimes called a hummingbird moth or a hawk moth.
This beautiful moth gets its common name from its large size and its feeding behavior similar to another visitor to this garden, the Anna's hummingbird. Both display rapid wing beats hovering over flowers using their long tonuges to collect nectar.

Carnivorous squirrels? Seriously? Apparently. A new study published in the Journal of Ethology 2024 reports on California ground squirrels hunting and eating voles. The study was conducted by Jennifer E. Smith and Sonja Wild, et. al. of UC Davis who called there observations shocking as this behavior had never been observed prior to their project. This story was found at https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/12/241218132149.htm and is based on the paper cited below. And there's a video by Sonja Wild at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyeoulM_GFk
